Event

A famous non-violent demonstration by Indian Independence leader Mahatma Gandhi in 1930. Since the British colonial administration had established a legal monopoly on the production of salt, Gandhi chose the act of illegally producing salt, an everyday necessity, and peaceful marching as a symbol that could unify Indians against colonial rule.

Event

Following the dissolution of the British Raj and British control over the Indian subcontinent after World War II, the territory was divided between two new states, the Dominion of India and the Dominion of Pakistan. With Pakistan being a Muslim-majority territory and India being a Hindu-majority territory, millions of people became displaced as religious divisions sparked the mass movement of people across the new boundaries and fierce violence. Hundreds of thousands of people were killed as a result.
